Sustainable communities are planned, built, or modified to promote a lifestyle that will leave the smallest possible footprint on our planet. What's that you say?
Well, here a few examples. A sustainable community might: collect rainwater for irrigation; use renewable energy sources like solar or wind; cut energy use with highly efficient insulation, heating/cooling, and appliances; restore wildlife habitats; maximize open space on land by using cluster development techniques; prevent pollution of water using wetland filtration; use recycled materials; leave trees intact; design low maintenance/passive solar homes; etc. Tonbo Meadow does all of these things and more so you can not only help to preserve our planet, but save money, too!
In 2007, Tonbo Meadow received a ‘Significant Achievement’ award from a panel of judges for the Lower Cape Fear Stewardship Development program. The program is run by the City of Wilmington & New Hanover, Brunswick & Pender Counties & their respective planning & water/sewer districts. The development was lauded for using the specific guidelines of the program as a baseline for integrating as many low-impact development practices (or LID) into the 3.2 acre site. Specific design elements of the project; including rain gardens, a stormwater wetland, preserved meadow space, tree protection & relocation plans, lessening impervious surface areas, and integration of sustainable construction practices were referenced. The development team will pursue the ‘Outstanding Recognition’ level in the future upon completion of the community. Visit their website for more details.
So, does a sustainable community look any different? Most people think it's better, friendlier, more intimate. On a large scale it might just seem to fit the land a little better, be a little more natural, and have less concrete surface. The houses may look like they enhance the landscape, like they've been there a while, and they welcome you to stay and enjoy. We'll be beginning soon, so come by and see for yourself. See you then.
